Underage Drinking in Trumbull

 

In 2010, the Trumbull Partnership Against Underage Drinking (TPAUD) surveyed all 7-12th grade students in the Trumbull Public Schools on their drinking attitudes and behavior. Parents of students in 7-12th grades were surveyed at Back to School Nights. The surveys reveal:

Who Is Drinking:

    • 13.5% of 8th graders in Trumbull drank in the previous month

    • 33.7% of THS 10th graders in the previous month

    • 60% of THS seniors drank in the previous month

    • 46% of THS seniors drank enough to get drunk

When Kids Start Drinking:

    • 63% of THS kids who drank first tried alcohol at age 14 or younger.

    • Research has shown that kids who drink before age 15 are more than 6 times more likely to have alcohol problems later in life than those who wait until they are 21 (Center for Substance Abuse and Research, 2010).

Where Our Kids Get Alcohol:

    • 39% from their own home

    • 51% from a friend’s home

    • 44% from an older friend/sibling

    • 23% bought for themselves in another town

Our Kids’ Perceptions VS. The Reality

    • 31% of 9th graders think that their parents believe that underage drinking is acceptable.

    • 98% of parents believe that underage drinking is unacceptable.

    • 9th graders who believe that their parents think that underage drinking is acceptable are 3.5 times less likely to drink and get drunk.

Are We Talking To Our Kids?

    • 52% of THS students believe their parents have set rules about underage drinking 88% of parents report having set rules about under-age drinking.
