Who We Are

Founded in 2005, Trumbull Early Childhood Education Center (TECEC) is the first free-standing public special needs preschool program in Connecticut.  Built on the firm foundation of an integrated education model, every classroom in TECEC educates children of all learning-capacities, emphasizing the importance of inclusion and understanding.  TECEC believes no child is typical; that every child is unique; and all children have valuable contributions to the lives and educations of their classmates.

In the years since its start, TECEC has grown in both size and reputation. With 12 classrooms and nearly 300 students between their morning and afternoon programs, TECEC prides itself on having nine inclusive classrooms, many with an equal integration of special needs students. Students in the school's two regional Head Start programs are thriving and TECEC is both proud and encouraged by their success.

In addition to the small victories made every day in the classrooms at TECEC, the school boasts numerous achievements including being named a Center for Excellence by Head Start, as well as playing an integral role in the CT Down Syndrome Congress, offering an English language learner program and specialized resources for students with autism.

Through their dedication in the classroom and in the lives of their students, the staff at TECEC has seen amazing transformations. Whether it's watching two children simply learning from each other or seeing a previously motion-impaired and non-communicative child leave their program walking and talking, TECEC continues to change the lives of children and their families every day.

Our Staff

Trumbull Special Education and Preschool Inclusion Program (PIP) and SRP programs are taught by teachers dually certified in early childhood and special education, who are supported by a transdisciplinary team. Other members of the team are the nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech/language pathologist, social worker and school psychologist. Each class is supported by trained paraprofessionals. All preschool programs are overseen by the Trumbull Preschool Administrator.

Entrance Criteria

To be placed in the Special Education Preschool, three and four year olds are assessed and found eligible for special education. An Individual Educational Plan is developed for implementation. Inquiries about this program may be made to the Child Find team at 1-203-452-4352. For further information please go to the Trumbull Public School Website.

If you have a child who is not currently in our program and will be age eligible (turning three by 12/31/2014) to attend as peer playmate (PIP Program), we are requesting that you assist us with the following process.  Please contact the office to fill out an inquiry form.  This form will be dated in order to place your child on the list for consideration for next year’s class. Following the completion of the inquiry form, you will receive a Commitment Letter to return to the office. Upon receipt of the Commitment Letter, you will be mailed a registration packet for completion and return at a later date.  Although we cannot determine an exact number of how many children we may need for the new school year, we anticipate placements for approximately 45 three-year old children and 15 four-year olds.
