Joe Fiore from Frenchtown Elementary School was one of 11 winners of the Scholastics first annual BE BIG in your Community contest for $2,500. His idea is to form an "Adopt a Grandparent" program or club. Through this program, students would be paired with seniors that would come from different living situations in the community. Students would literally "adopt" a senior that they would develop a relationship with over several months. Some of the experiences he proposes would be creating a scrapbook, sharing music or videos, singing and storytelling.

CONGRATULATIONS TO TRUMBULL'S
TEACHER OF THE YEAR 2010
PATRICIA FRILLICI
Some words from Patricia Frillici
I have lived in Trumbull for twenty years with my husband Tom and my two children Lauren and Matthew who are 23 and 21, respectively. We moved to Trumbull to raise our family for one reason alone, the incredible education system. It is a fabulous honor to serve as 2009 Trumbull Teacher of the Year, where I can give back to the community of Trumbull which has offered so much to my family.
I have taught in Trumbull for fourteen years. I was a 4th grade teacher for 11 years at Middlebrook School where my classroom became a community of learners dedicated to “real world” learning experiences that built memorable lessons for life. For the last three years, I have served as the Math Specialist at Middlebrook School, where I have the great joy of working with both the staff and students in our school from kindergarten to fifth grade by helping to improve math skills and practices within our community of learners. I have discovered that teaching is my Personal Legend. A Personal Legend is described as “a path we decide to take that fills our heart with enthusiasm. It is the path of our dreams!” Both teaching and learning fill my heart with enthusiasm. Teaching brings me great joy and is a dream come true career. I encourage other teachers to create their own Personal Legend, as they have fabulous stories to tell about their teaching experiences, too.
My success, as a teacher, comes from working with other teachers and administrators in a team approach while improving teaching practices and student learning. I encourage students, teachers, administrators, and the community to apply a team-based approach to strengthen the learning opportunities for all of our students. By working as supportive educational teammates…..Together We Can Achieve!
