Reading Record Assessments

Reading records are taken with students a minimum of three times a year. They measure a student’s growth in reading from the beginning of the year through the end of the year. Reading records are taken on a one-to-one basis. The reading level increases throughout the year.

The student reads directly to the teacher, retells the story in his/her own words, and then orally answers comprehension questions posed by the teacher. Text is leveled in difficulty, from level 1 to level 30. When the student reads, the teacher measures his/her reading accuracy and reading comprehension. The teacher records and analyzes the student’s reading errors. Students are successful at an instructional level when they read with a minimum of 90% word accuracy and 75 - 80% comprehension. Pacing is also a factor. A student may read accurately at a higher level than their score indicates due to the fact that retelling and comprehension are factored into the results.

You will find information about the reading record assessments used in the Trumbull Public Schools at the elementary school level.

By viewing the sample reading record text at each level, you will gain insight into the increasingly complex words and sentences used as the levels increase. As you select reading materials with your child at the library or bookstore, keep these reading levels in mind.

If you have any questions, please consult with your child's teacher and/or principal, or feel free to contact me.
