PROTOCOL TO SELECT STUDENTS FOR ADVANCED MATHEMATICS OPPORTUNITIES
Madison and Hillcrest Middle Schools

The Trumbull Public Schools provides opportunities for advancement in mathematics courses, per Policy #5123: PROMOTION/RETENTION/ACCELERATION/GRADES K-8. This policy states that “The Middle School instructional content and difficulty also varies by placement in specific leveled courses.” Placement in leveled mathematics classes in the middle schools is based upon specific criteria, as described below. PLEASE NOTE: The criteria has been adjusted for this 2013-14 school year, based upon the use of more rigorous Common Core State Standards-aligned assessments this year.

  • 6A Adv Math
  • PreAlgebra 6th Grade
  • PreAlgebra 7th Grade

6A (advanced) mathematics: 

  • 5th grade 6A Prognosis assessment score of 82 or above
  • Non-verbal SAI on 5th grade OLSAT (Otis-Lennon School Ability Test) of 115 or above
  • 5th grade district-administered DRP™ (Degrees of Reading Power) PERCENTAGE score of 70 or above
  • Trimester 1 and 2 district assessments of 85 or above


1.) If this criteria has not been met, the classroom teacher shall present substantial data to the principal that may justify why a student should be reconsidered. This data may include:

    • Individual teacher assessments
    • Insight on work ethic
    • APBAs

2.) If the principal agrees that the student should be reconsidered for placement, the principal and classroom teacher shall then request a review with the following:

    • if an elementary student, the math specialist and math program leader
    • if a middle school student, the math instructional specialist.

3.) If all parties agree, the principal will have a discussion with central office for authorization to proceed with the placement of students in the 6A mathematics class

PreAlgebra 400 in 6th grade:

  • 5th grade Prognosis assessment score of 90 or above
  • Non-verbal SAI on 5th grade OLSAT (Otis-Lennon School Ability Test) of 115 or above
  • 5th grade district-administered DRP™ (Degrees of Reading Power) score of 62 or above
  • Trimester 1 and 2 district assessments of 90 or above
  • Pre-Algebra Prognosis assessment of 90 or above

(1)  Students who are seated in 6A at the start of the 6th grade shall all take the Pre-Algebra Prognosis in the first 2 weeks of school.
(2) For all students meeting the criteria (a score of 90 or above), a teacher recommendation from 5th grade is requested prior to placement in Pre-Algebra 400.

There are two PreAlgebra levels for 7th Grade - 400 and 300

PreAlgebra 400 in 7th grade:

  • Pre-Algebra Prognosis assessment score of 87 or above
  • Non-verbal SAI on 5th grade OLSAT (Otis-Lennon School Ability Test) of 115 or above
  • 6th grade district-administered DRP™ (Degrees of Reading Power) score of 70 or above
  • Trimester 1 and 2 district assessments of 93 or above

  • 6th grade district-administered DRP™ (Degrees of Reading Power) score of 70 or above
  • Trimester 1 and 2 district assessments of 90 or above
