Introduction

The Manhattan Project! The name given to the research surrounding one of the most devastating weapons in history.  Designed by Albert Einstein, the atomic bomb was ready for action in June, 1945.  With WWII dragging on, President Truman was faced with a difficult decision: Should the United States unleash this deadly weapon on the Empire of Japan?

 Task

The year is 1945 and you have been chosen as part of an advisory committee to President Truman.  Your goal as a committee is  to gather information concerning various aspects of the atomic bomb and the war with Japan.  Once you have gathered this information, your committee must make a recommendation to the President concerning the use of the atomic bomb. Should he use this weapon to end the war?  Your group will be required to present your findings in an oral presentation accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation.

Procedure

1. You have already been assigned to a group.  Each student in the group must now choose one of the following roles: Truman's Advisor (Group Leader), Scientist 1 (Manhattan Project), Scientist 2 (Trinity Site), and Secretary of War.

2. You will then gather materials on your topic to share with the group. (Click on your role below for detailed instructions on your topic.)  The information that you gather will be used by the group to formulate an answer to the question: "Should Truman use the Atomic Bomb?  (You will have 2 days to gather information.)

 3. Meet as a group to share gathered information. Make a decision on how to advise Truman. (You will have 1 day to meet as a group.)

4. Your group must now make a Power Point slideshow to present the information that you have gathered. The slideshow will consist of 5 pages. Page 1 = scientist1, page2 = scientist2, page3 = secretary of war, page 4 = Truman's advisor, and page 5 = overall recommendation to the President.

 5. Each member of the group is responsible for their individual page.  (You will have 1 day to create your page.)

6. Page 5 will be created by the group as a whole.  The group must then combine the 5 pages to create the slideshow. (You will have 1 day to complete this task.)

7. You will meet as a group for 15 minutes to plan your oral presentation.  Each member is responsible for explaining their own slide.  It is the responsibility of Truman's advisor to explain the overall recommendation.  The presentation can be no longer than 10 minutes.

Conclusion

Congratulations!  If you made to this point than you have successfully navigated your way through the webquest.  At this point, your research and decision making skills should be at their peak.  Hopefully you have learned how difficult it is to make decisions when in a political position. Also, it is important to realize how those decisions can change the world forever.  That is why all sides of every issue must be discussed in depth before any decisions are made.  I hope that your group carefully analyzed all of the information before coming to your final decision. Remember this assignment next time you are asked to take a position on a controversial topic.  The skills that you have used will definitely help you in the future!
